While a completely new Student Center building is certainly an exciting possibility, what are some other ideas?
Extreme Makeover: Rhodes Edition
FJ
It's already in the center of campus, an open and inviting building that is scientifically-outdated, and unreasonably expensive to renovate (due to the new Robertson Hall). A renovation to a new purpose, however, is surely imminent. Can you imagine a redone FJ-B movie theater? Drinking a Steak n' Shake milkshake in the FJ Amphitheater? This is a prime location for our Student Center, as it is already at the very center of our campus and offers a unique building structure that is home to an enclosed courtyard and allows tons of sunlight to shine through its full-length glass window walls.
Barret Library Basement
Already equipped with a movie theater, a large flexible event space (Barret 051), and near the center of campus this space could undergo a renovation making it more than capable of functioning as a great Student Center. The currently dividing and large administrative space could be moved to further mesh with current library administrative spaces on other floors, freeing-up and connecting the entirety of the bottom floor of the library. An already plush movie theater would become 24/7 as other spaces could be transformed into Student Organization offices, arcade rooms, or places to house third-party dining options.
Hassell Hall
Likely the next building on campus to be repurposed, and what better purpose than a Student Center? As music moves across the street to West Campus, Hassell Hall remains. A performance stage that could easily transition into a movie theater, musical practice rooms that become student org offices, and a classroom that becomes a nerdiest of arcades.
Clough Hall
With countless programs and professors moving into current and yet to be built space on West Campus, Clough looks to be a great place for our next Student Center. Being centrally located on campus, the Clough-Hansson Gallery would make a great miniature food court for third-party dining options, expanding the second floor by clearing offices would make for a great ping pong/foosball/billiards lounge area.
West Campus
Who knows?!? But we're excited at the prospects! It's cheaper to build here than on-campus, so it is definitely an opportunity to claim our space with a more customized, larger Student Center than would be possible on the Main Campus.
